“ARE WE THERE YET?”

By St. Margarets

On Friday more than 80 Transition Year students were brought to Glenabo Woods on a 10km walk, to regroup with their peers after a long summer break between 3rd year and TY.

The walk, which was around 3 and a half hours long, was very tiring and exerting for the students. On the trip, the students got to reconnect and chat about their plans for the school year and their past activities during the summer.

The three class groups of this year’s transition year were present, St. Margaret’s, St. Joan’s, and St. Celine’s along with the Leaving Certificate Applied students. The year head, Ms Hennessy, was also in attendance along with Ms Healy Rae, Ms Brogan and Mr Lucey.

The day was full of anticipation and excitement for the coming year. The TYs were speculating as to what would be going ahead and what would have to be cancelled. Many were asking about the possibility of a trip abroad to countries in Europe and were hopeful of a musical in the spring.

It was abundantly clear to the girls that the teachers were less strict, making it seem as though they trusted the girls more since finishing the Junior Cycle. It made the whole day more enjoyable as everyone could soak up the exciting and joyful atmosphere, while reuniting with friends and looking forward to less schoolwork and no stressful upcoming state exam.

The TYs enjoyed the easy introduction back into school life and senior cycle. The day was a success as questions were answered, assumptions corrected, and friends reunited after a long summer and tough year of Junior Cycle in the middle of a global pandemic.

The excitement quickly turned into boredom as we realized how long we were going on a walk for. “Are we there yet?” several of us queried, “Somebody should’ve warned us!” several more announced. The lack of preparation was evident as the TYs were not appropriately dressed for the scorching sun.

All in all, it was a great day that was thoroughly enjoyed. With such a great start to the year, the TY’s are anticipating what has yet to come throughout the upcoming year.
